Theme 2 – Materials and devices for a sustainable food industry and eco-friendly packaging. Project entitled:
“MONICA” – Development of an artificial intelligence-based decision support system (DSS), accessible via a web platform and mobile application, for the management and control of nutritional and water aspects of open field horticultural crops (courgettes, aubergines, broccoli).
Primary objective of the operation
The project aims to support the ecological transition of the national production system through the cross-cutting involvement of technology suppliers and a major agro-industrial producer, with a view to combining digital transition and sustainability in agricultural production, redefining standards for open field crop management and “Nutrition and Irrigation Council” management through an innovative system of sensors (field, optical, satellite) and predictive processing capabilities based on Artificial Intelligence, in line with the objectives of the Pact for Work and Climate, and integrating with regional, national and European programmes.

“ERICA – AI-based information technology platform
for Water Resource Efficiency in Actinidia Cultivation”
Primary objective of the operation
The technological innovation of the project allows for the creation of a fully automated irrigation system with the application of machine learning, which collects data from tensiometers positioned in the fruit and vegetable farm, processes it on the platform and outputs irrigation recommendations that are transmitted directly to the system, modulating irrigation cycles as appropriate. The advantage is that the irrigation cycle is based on the actual soil moisture level rather than on hypothetical estimates.
